Shibashi Qigong Set Two

Shibashi Set Two has all the benefits of Set One, but takes us deeper – activating and moving qi in the lower half of the body, taking qi deeper inside, and fostering strength, stability and vitality. Set One, in comparison, is more concerned with the upper half of our body and opening the flow of our meridian system.

Both are moving meditations, promoting relaxation and inner harmony. But Set Two emphasises the foundational connection between our body and the earth. With continued practice you feel the energy rising from the Yangquan Point, also known as Bubbling Spring. This point, located on the soles of the feet, is the first point of the Kidney meridian and is considered the body’s connection to the earth. In traditional Chinese medicine, the Yangquan point plays a vital role in grounding and drawing energy from the earth.

This energy rises up through the legs, collecting in the lower Dantian, nourishing the body, and replenishing its vital energy. The lower Dantian, located just below the navel, is often referred to as the body’s energy centre. Feeling this connection, and the upward flow of energy from the earth into the body, can be a profound experience.

Shibashi Set Two is particularly strengthening for our legs. The gentle yet deliberate movements encourage the legs to move more than in Set One. This is particularly beneficial for older adults, as legs naturally weaken and lose muscle mass as we age. Set Two helps to build strength, improve balance and co-ordination, and promote better circulation. Studies have shown that maintaining leg strength is crucial for healthy ageing, as it supports mobility, stability, and overall vitality. Set Two provides a gentle yet effective way to address these challenges.

It can initially feel more awkward than Set One as some of the moves are more complex. But as the practice becomes familiar and the moves smoother, one appreciates how the flow of qi is the underlying force. A deeper integration of breath, body, and qi unfolds and you feel your whole body and mind working together in harmony. This beautiful practice meets you where you are (starting gently and with no need to rush), and offers endless opportunities for growth and discovery.

Set Two takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. While one is still becoming familiar with the moves, it’s useful to start with some of Set One to move into a relaxed state. Relaxation is key for feeling the subtle movement of qi underlying the physical movement, and unlocking the full benefits and beauty.
